What Is Career Health?
Career health is the overall well-being and sustainability of your career. It's about more than job stability, staying in the same role, or seeing a salary land each month. Good career health means professional fulfilment, long-term employability, and a working life that stays aligned with your values and goals.
Think of it the way you think about physical health. You don't only see a doctor when something breaks. You build habits, check in regularly, and catch small things before they become big ones. Career health works the same way. A regular check-in keeps you ready, not reactive.
The need is real, and it's now:
- 9 in 10 Singapore workers see an urgent need to reskill and upskill to stay competitive.
- 95% of companies report improved individual performance through personalised learning.
- In 2024, 241,000 workers were sponsored by 24,000 companies for SkillsFuture-supported training.
This matters even if you're employed and comfortable. Many working adults still have 10 to 40 years of career ahead of them. What you do now shapes the options you'll have then.
Strong career health draws on a few key factors: adaptability, reskilling, career planning, future readiness, job satisfaction, progress, and flexibility. You don't need to perfect all of them. You just need to keep them moving.
ACE Framework
Whatever your stage, and whether you're an individual or an employer, building career health follows the same three moves. We call it ACE.
1. Assess
Understand your current skills, how well your role still fits, and where the gaps are. Don't wait for a problem before asking whether your direction is still the right one. The earlier you know, the more choices you have.
2. Chart
Set career goals and review them regularly, adjusting for your life stage, shifts in the labour market, and the skills you'll need next. Career planning isn't a one-time activity. It's something you return to.
3. Execute
Act on the plan. Sign up for training, speak with a career coach, apply for a new role, or explore a growth industry. Progress doesn't need a grand leap. It starts with one step.
Develop Career Planning Habits
Career planning is the key to navigating your professional life with confidence and purpose, ensuring each step taken is in harmony with your broader life ambitions. Effective career planning is crucial for sustaining your career health in a fast-evolving job market. If you are currently employed, you likely still have a good 10 to 40 years ahead of you in your career journey.
To attain good career health, laying a solid foundation is essential. This involves crafting a dynamic career plan that aligns your professional path with your personal goals and values.
Discover Your VIPS
Self-discovery is the foundation of good career planning. Before you map out where you want to go, it helps to understand who you are. That's what VIPS is about: your Values, Interests, Personality, and Skills.
- Values: What matters most to you in your work, such as security, achievement, creativity, work-life balance, independence, or making a difference.
- Interests: The kinds of work activities that naturally engage or excite you, the things you'd happily spend more time on.
- Personality: How you work best, and the environments and working styles that bring out your strongest self.
- Skills: What you're already good at, and what you've built through work, training, or life experience.
When you understand your VIPS, career decisions stop being about what looks right on paper and start being about what actually fits you. That's the difference between a job you tolerate and a career you grow in.
Deepen your Knowledge and Skills
Knowing where the jobs and industries with high growth potential are and intentionally upgrading your skills can help you improve your career prospects.
As the job market evolves, so should you. Remaining adaptable and up to date ensures that your career plan is enriched with diverse options and opportunities, making you an invaluable asset in any professional setting.
Adopting a continuous learning and upskilling mindset is essential to remain relevant and competitive. This commitment to growth ensures resilience against industry disruptions, keeping your career trajectory on an upward path.
This approach will make you more desirable as an asset to your company and also significantly strengthen your career health, ensuring effective, long-term career development.
Decide Your Career Pathways
Charting your career pathways and taking actionable steps will bring you closer to fulfilling your career potential.
By establishing clear, achievable objectives and actively seeking opportunities for learning and upskilling, you equip yourself with the resilience needed to grow in the ever-changing job market.
Your Pathway, One Step at a Time
Career health looks different depending on where you are. Pick the pathway that fits you best. Each one follows the same ACE approach: Assess, Chart, Execute.
Fresh Graduate
You're at the start, with more options than you might realise. The goal now is to build a strong foundation and a clear sense of direction.
- Assess: Get a clear read on where you stand and where the opportunities are with CareersCompass by MyCareersFuture, Career Matching Services, and the Skills Demand for the Future Economy Report.
- Chart: Turn that awareness into a plan. Use CareersFinder for personalised recommendations, book one-to-one Skills and Training Advisory Services with a Skills Ambassador and set up your Careers and Skills Passport.
- Execute: Put the plan into motion. Search and apply on MyCareersFuture, gain real experience through the GRaduate Industry Traineeships (GRIT) Programme (3 to 6 months, across public and private sectors), and apply on JobStreet using your Careers and Skills Passport.

Mid-Career Growth
You're established and want to keep climbing, deepening, or simply staying ahead. This is about intentional progression, not waiting to be noticed.
- Assess: Take stock with CareersCompass by MyCareersFuture, tap the Volunteer Career Advisors Initiative for sector-specific perspective, and study the Skills Demand for the Future Economy Report.
- Chart: Build a plan with weight behind it. Work with a certified career coach through Polaris to develop a personalised Career Development Plan, keep your Careers and Skills Passport current, and use the MySkillsFuture Portal to map your next skills.
- Execute: Act on it. Tap the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme (for Singaporeans aged 40 and above), keep an eye on MyCareersFuture, and broaden your horizons through the Overseas Markets Immersion Programme for global or regional opportunities.

Mid-Career Switch
You're ready for something different, whether that's a new sector, a new role, or a fresh start. A switch isn't a leap into the dark when you plan it in stages.
- Assess: Start with Career Matching Services , the Volunteer Career Advisors Initiative, and the Skills Demand for the Future Economy Report to understand where your experience can take you.
- Chart: Build the bridge. Work with a coach through Polaris, use Skills and Training Advisory Services and the MySkillsFuture Portal to plan your reskilling, and capture it all in your Careers and Skills Passport.
- Execute: Make the move with structured support: Career Conversion Programmes (with higher funding support for eligible mature jobseekers aged 40 and above), the Mid-Career Pathways Programme (industry attachments, for those aged 40 and above), and the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (a train-and-place programme running 3 to 12 months, part-time or full-time).
